COMPRESS 6.40- COMPLETE PRESSURE VESSEL DESIGN
The major change to Compress 6.40 Build 6130 is the
inclusion of the ASME 2000 Addenda. New CD's have been
sent out to all Compress for Windows clients with current
maintenance agreements. The CD also contains updated
versions of Vessel Coster (Build 934) and Compress 5.80 for
DOS. For clients that only use Compress for DOS, Version
5.80 can be downloaded from the www.codeware.com web site.
Compress for DOS may no longer be purchased, and the
Windows version of TUBESHEET will be released this year.

AFT FATHOM 5.0 - COMPRESSIBLE FLOW IN PIPE NETWORKS(STEADY STATE)
Version 5.0 will be released in February and contains the
following new features: * Advanced heat transfer options
* Insulation data sets can be defined * Rectangular ducts
* Annotations can be added to Workspace and Visual Report
* Expanded capability for pump vs. system curve generation
* Ability to save graphs for fast recall * Save Worspace
and Visual Report as graphic file. This update will be
supplied free of charge to purchases of vers 4.0 after Oct
31, 2000. Other users can upgrade from vers 4.0 to 5.0 for
a cost of US$250

SPECIAL FEATURE - PROCESS SIMULATION
Many companies make use of process flowsheet simulation
software to simulate mass and energy balances associated
with chemical plants. Software such as CHEMCAD, SUPERPRO,
ASPEN PLUS, HYSIM, and PRO-II are used to simulate
chemical processes incorporating distillation, reaction,
flash, electrolytes, solids processing etc. Only problem
is that these software programs are not inexpensive.
CHEMCAD (US$18500) and SUPERPRO (US$13875), are by
far the lowest priced full feature simulators, while most
others are available only on a lease basis. CHEMCAD also
has the advantage that it has optional add-on modules for
heat exchanger thermal design, batch distillation, batch
reaction, dynamic modeling of distillation. This means
that you are not paying for features you don't require.

For universities and technikons, there are some very
special offers available. A 25-user LAN version of CHEMCAD
can be leased on an annual basis for us$1500,
while an academic departmental licence for SUPERPRO can be
purchased for US$995. SUPERPRO has special unit
operation modules for environmental processes, waste water
treatment processes and batch processes and is an excellent
teaching tool. In addition to the process simulator, a
10-user academic licence for PHAWORKS (US$500) will
allow engineering students to be taught how to do process
HAZOP studies for the process plants they are simulating.

FREE SOFTWARE CORNER

This month features an excellent "nearly free" (US$29)
shareware software called VENTMANIFOLD. This software is
an Excel application that operates in either SI or English
units, and is used for calculating the pressure profile
through a manifold of relief valve discharges. It is used
for evaluating the design and safety of a flare header
system or manifold relief valve system. Up to 15 sources
can be defined. The software includes a fluid property
database and a pipe database. The software can be ordered
directly from the author at ChemEng Software at web
address:

Other free software and software evaluation versions are
available from our website download area at
